Tufted Bird-Dropping Moth

This moth is supposedly "common" but it's the first one we've ever seen, and no wonder -- it really has great camouflage and is able to hide in plain sight. This one was caught out in bright sunlight on the trunk of a black walnut tree, but took off quickly into a neighboring yard when disturbed by the attentions of the photographer. In this yard, the caterpillars of this species might feed on roses or wild cherries.

Alas, these pictures don't really do this noctuid moth justice. Its coloring and markings are quite artful and attractive.
