Lunate Zale
(family Noctuidae, subfamily Catocalinae)

This is the largest of the zale moths, and is common in this area. Their coloration helps them blend in with tree barks.

This one was found resting at night on top of a patio umbrella, which is not the best place for its natural camouflage to work, but a good place for the photographer to discover it.

Its host plants include several kinds of trees and shrubs. Our cherry, maple and oak are on its menu.
