Hummingbird Clearwing

The wings are a blur of motion, but the moth's body remains almost still as it hovers in place while its proboscis probes a budleia flower for nectar.

Host plants for the caterpillars in our yard are honeysuckles; other possible hosts are hawthorns and snowberries.

Sphinx moth caterpillars prefer to pupate underground, so when raising one in captivity, make sure its habitat has several inches of loose soil or mulch at the bottom.
