Leopard Moth

This nicely-spotted specimen is a non-native species introduced from Europe in 1887. Cornell Univ. lists it as an important pest of shade and fruit trees.

The larvae tunnel into the heartwood of a host tree, and live inside their hollowed-out galleries for almost 2 years before pupating and emerging as moths.
