Danaus plexippus

Monarch

Here is a monarch emerging from its chrysalis.

Top left, the chrysalis cracks open and the head pokes out. The bulky body is at the top of the chrysalis. Top right, the wings pull free.

Bottom left, the heavy body slides out and the new butterfly is left hanging from the empty chrysalis by the hooks on its legs.

Finally, the butterfly's antennae are free and it is in position to pump up its wings.
